UZZA (Uh-Zuh)
UZZA combines aggressive, depressive and progressive musical themes into an oddly compelling blend of post-punk pop confection. They’re a five member outfit fronted by a mysterious, statuesque redhead with a distinctive voice and commanding stage presence; they are one of the true stand-outs in the Twin Cities.
UZZA is a moody, musical monster with an impressive repertoire that ranges from the manic to the melancholy. Their songs are generally dark and deal with murky subjects like paranoia, conspiracy theories, and the afterlife. While some may smack of sarcasm, others are surprisingly heartfelt. But each track in UZZA’s jukebox of doom is a gloomy gem, meticulously crafted and performed with taut, muscular swagger.
UZZA was formed in March of 2009 and is the brain child of Tabatha Predovich, an alien abductee, and protégé of William Cooper, author of “Behold A Pale Horse.” Tabatha has worked in a series of musical projects which have led her from England to Detroit and eventually, back to Minneapolis. The band’s name is a reference to one of the three daughters of God who, according to Egyptian mythology, came to Earth on a chariot of fire – that is to say, a UFO. Tabatha conceived the band after an out-of-body experience where the aforementioned Uzza visited her and urged: “Wake those who sleep and prepare them for the things to come, and it’s not good!” Make of that what you will, but should you happen to meet Tabatha you might find yourself buying almost anything this beguiling beauty sells. Perhaps it’s that same power of persuasion that enticed such dynamic and talented musicians to join her band. Well, that, and the superlative material.
Guitarist Rich Patterson is a hold-over from Tabatha’s previous band, Radium. Rich has been writing and performing with Tabatha for the past decade so he was a given to join the band. But as for the others, Tabatha turned to her previous vocation for results. She induced a lucid dream where she was again visited by Uzza, who bestowed upon her the names and email addresses of three stellar, local musicians: Geoff Maas on bass (previously of Våpöör Løck); Chris Ginther (from the band Beautiful Noise); and Brandon Nessen (from Kid Tested and Conduit). Together they’ve created an industrial-strength, military-grade juggernaut – precise, explosive and capable of leaving an indelible mark on your psyche. Okay, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but it’s no distortion to say they’re definitely worth checking out. Because, as was the case with Tabatha, once you’ve seen UZZA you’ll become a brainwashed believer.
The Great Upset
This Minneapolis based alt-Western group employs a unique combination – 2 lead singers/songwriter/guitarists backed by a strong off-center rhythm section with a classically trained cellist.
After meeting for the first time in the summer of 2003 and then again in the spring of 2004, Bart Phillips and Jeromy Darling started playing and writing music together on a regular basis. What began as friendship developed into musical arrangements rooted in faith and common appreciation of each other’s talent. The band O.D.Y.C. came out of that pairing.
In the summer of 2004, cellist Lucas Shogren, was introduced to Bart and Jeromy through mutual friends. Already touring the world with an award winning group, the Vols Quartet, Lucas brought a trained ear and incredible experience (including a solo with the great Ray Charles) to the band.
Friends and longtime local musicians from diverse musical backgrounds joined to add the backbone to the group: Jason Roath (Dime Theory. Magic Pants, Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, et al) on bass guitar brought a solid foundation stemming from touring with rockabilly and funk bands. Matt Terry (Solidarity, Creeping Charlie, Chump, Wee Little Kelly) on drums brought a hardcore punk/alt rock aesthetic that added a unique flavor to their more traditional folk melodies.
Therefore, with new members and new vision, in the Fall of 2005 ‘The Great Upset’ was created out of the O.D.Y.C. genesis. The songs that O.D.Y.C. had been playing as acoustic numbers, were mow more fully fleshed out and ready for recording. Following some unexpected, private donations, The Great Upset completed their first album, ‘Black Sun Rising’. Offering an honest look at the state of humanity, and their place in it all, The Great Upset lyrically waded through their own personal shortcomings, fears and an overarching commitment to truth. The album deftly expressed a new direction in their music.
On April 5th, 2008, The band released their sophomore effort ‘The Coldest Kiss’…wholly original, yet warmly familiar. Layering delicate vocals atop a nest of anarchic rhythm and strings, the songs coalesce around the musical integrity of its membership. As a narrative, the album is a pronounced overture away from post-80’s ironic bombast, with strong hints of a resurgence of melodic neo-grunge.More than just stories, these songs represent an honest discussion between two men, their God, and their life experience.
Keeping a regular circuit at local bars/clubs around the Twin Cities and the Midwest. Keep your eyes and ears open!
